Originally, a debut was intended to introduce a young woman into society as a marriage prospect. This event was orchestrated as a formal banquet to attract bachelors from prominent and rich families. In the modern day, many still celebrate this event. As a girl nears 18, her family begins to plan the momentous occasion months in advance by selecting the ideal venue, debut catering package, designer, and events planners.
However, the difference between then and now is that women have more options open to them than just marriage—continued education and a professional career among them. Thus, on her special day, it’s important that a debutante is reminded that she is so much more than what the world may be telling her to be. The typical debut programs are more than just entertainment, pomp, and blare—they are meant to teach, encourage, and inspire.
The Cotillion
One of the most prominent parts of a girl’s debut is the cotillion, which often involves 9 pairs of dancers performing either a formal waltz or dance number. This part of the program can take place either at the beginning or at the end of the event. The members of the “cotillion court” must choreograph and practice a dance months prior the event. Following the dance, members of the cotillion court may then serve as the debutante’s escorts, thus representing those who will help guide the debutante in her life journey.
A debutante does not just sneak into the venue or walk about unseen. She must “come out” on her own with a grand entrance and a killer dress to boot. The debutante is often escorted to a seat of honor by members of the cotillion court to symbolize her entrance into breaking out into as a grown woman.

The 18 Roses
For a lot of girls, the 18 roses is a highlight of the debut program. It represents a girl’s readiness in the area of romance, as was the original purpose of the debut. The first rose is usually given by the debutante’s father to symbolize something that is both beautiful and “thorny”. He is then followed by the other male members of the family, as the protectors of the girl. The remaining men in the 18 Roses lineup are friends of the debutante, and the person selected as either the second-to-the-last rose or the last rose is the girl’s special someone.
The 18 Candles
After the 18 Roses, the 18 Candles program transitions from the romance aspect to the girl as an independent member of society. It involves the women who are important to the debutante—as advisors, teachers, and trusted peers. These women give speeches and advice, and state their well-wishes for the debutante. They then each light a candle that symbolizes light—light that will guide the girl on her life journey. Once all 18 candles have been lit, they are placed on the debutante’s birthday cake and blown out.
The 18 Treasure
As the debutante celebrates the beginning of womanhood, she will need tools that either help her in the future, encourage her in the present, or give her something fond to look back on. In the 18 Treasures program, friends and family members are tasked to give the debutante special gifts or “tokens”, and explain how they will become inspirations for her. These “treasures” represent the friendship between the giver and the debutante, because they indicate how well they know each other.
A debut is an event that is once-in-a-lifetime for many girls. It’s more than just an extravagant birthday party—it’s a celebration of life, and of what’s to come.

Order an essayDetermine the number of invitations you send out. Keep in mind that one invitation can potentially yield 5 people in return. A card per family, and you send out 50 invitations, you can have a room of 200 to 300 people.
Custom cards are nice, but can get very costly. To thwart costs, you can pick up an invitation kit from your local Target or Walmart in the party supply section. A kit can have 20-40 pairs of both a blank invitation cards and thank you cards and envelopes. To give your invites a more professional touch, purchase some vellum from an arts and crafts store, usually about a dollar depending on the design or texture.
If you don't already own one, get a single hole puncher. You will hole punch the invites and the vellum, and tie the two with a ribbon. Ribbon color will be based on your theme and motif. Instead of printing directly on to the card, you will print on to the vellum. Do a test print on ordinary paper before you start cutting your vellum.
On the invite include the name of the celebrant, date, venue, your royal court, RSVP, theme if you have one. Some relatives, may live far, so include directions on a separate insert. If you have RSVP cards, include postage on a self-addressed envelope.
(Redirected from Philippine Debut)
The debut (/dɛˈbuː/) is a traditionalFilipinocoming-of-age celebration which celebrates a young woman's 18th birthday, the age of maturity in the Philippines. In order to have the Philippines coming of age, the young woman must be a virgin. Signifies as purity and maturity.
Although also reaching legal maturity at 18, a Filipino man may mark his own debut on his 21st birthday, albeit with less formal celebrations or none at all.
1Description
Description[edit]
On her 18th birthday, a Filipino girl customarily throws a large party, complete with her own hand-picked entourage of 18 individuals or multiple sets of 18. The celebrant's court usually wears a formal dress, such as the Barong Tagalog or the western black tie.
Program[edit]
A typical ceremony begins with a short prayer invoking blessings upon the debutante. She then enters, and performs traditional dances with her court for their guests. The most important one is known as the 'Grand Cotillion Dance', usually a waltz.
An '18 Roses Dance' is also done, in which 18 males of the debutante's choice dance with her after presenting her with a single red rose or her favourite flower. This dance is almost always preceded or concluded with a 'Father and Daughter Dance', and sometimes the father takes the place of the 18th rose (who is often the girl's significant other). An older male relative, such as a grandfather, may take the father's place if the latter is unavailable or deceased.
The debutante also has 18 'candles', presented by female friends or relations. Each delivers a short speech about her relationship with the celebrant and any special greeting, and lights a candle that is either in her hand or placed in a stand.
Music and other performances are usually interspersed between the '18 items' rites, while dinner and sometimes alcohol are served. A birthday cake ceremony often occurs, and a fireworks display may conclude more extravagant parties. The night ends with the debutante's speech, in which she shares her thoughts on life and extends her gratitude towards her guests.

18th Debut Program Flow
Recent additions to the ceremony are the '18 Treasures', in which 18 individuals each present the debutante with a gift. These usually also involve a speech from each individual, but unlike the Roses and Candles sets, these groups are of mixed gender.
Others involve material presents for the debutante, such as the 18 shoes and the 18 bills. A 'blue bill' in the context of this ceremony refers to the Philippine one thousand peso note, which is blue.
Lastly, there are the (optional) 18 white roses. If the debutante is missing a figure in her life such as a father, she chooses her 18 white roses in place of that figure.
In film[edit]
The custom was highlighted in the 2001 American small-budget film The Debut,[1] starring Dante Basco.

18th Birthday Party Ideas
Below is my list of 18th Birthday Party Ideas. As it's their first adult birthday party, some teens might not want anything too structured or themed for their 18th birthday parties—they might consider that too kidsy. Often they're quite happy to just have a house party with their friends and plenty of loud music, food and if in the UK...alcohol.
If that's the case, check out the Design It Yourself section for advice and suggestions for individual components such as party invitations, party food and party supplies to help them put something more casual together.
The chances are, they'll probably want to celebrate their 18th birthdays with their friends and not their parents, so keep any family celebrations separate. You might want to plan a lunch during the day for this or a smaller dinner on another evening.
If they're having a party at home, agree a finish time and give the neighbours plenty of warning as they're going to want to play music loud. You may also want to take the precaution of moving any breakables or valuable items to another room which will be off limits—or better still locked. For visitors in the US, you might also need to consider taking away any alcohol from the house and being clear about rules regarding drinking, smoking and drugs.
For UK visitors, where it's legal to drink alcohol at 18, be sure to make plans for people getting home. Leave details for a taxi service, or extra bedding if people are likely to stay over. Make sure somebody keeps an eye on people who are planning to drive and are prepared to take their keys away from them if necessary.
If they're having food, its fine to keep things simple like burgers, pizzas and tacos, but just make sure there's plenty of it. If you're in the UK and people are going to be drinking, get the host to keep some carb-heavy food like burgers or fries back until later and bring these out towards the end of the party to help absorb some of the alcohol.
If you don't find any 18th birthday party ideas you like from the list below, be sure to check out the Party Themes A-Z incase something from a different category catches your eye. Most party themes can be adapted to suit different ages with just a little tweaking.
